In case you are wondering why I’m in Northern Iceland….I am doing an artist residency in Blönduós, Iceland. Artist-in-residence programs give artists the opportunity to live and work outside of their usual environments, providing them with time to reflect, research, or produce work. During a residency, artists can explore new locations, different cultures, and experiment with different materials.

I chose this place because I have always wanted to come to Iceland, which has a rich textile history but also a place of wild beauty and mythology (one of my favorite subjects!).

After I arrived, I headed straight to the studio to begin work. I’m creating a prototype of a Medusa sculpture using a new material called Fosshape. Fosshape is a thermo plastic fiber that stiffens and holds it shape after heating. I’m experimenting to see if it will work as a new medium in the interior structures for my sculptures. If I’m successful, I will create a life-size sculpture of Medusa along with other gods and creatures focusing on a future solo exhibition.

I will try and post daily along with amazing photos, progress, and even what I listen to in the studio. I hope you follow along as it will truly be a rare glimpse into the unique workings of my artistic process.

Music: Today I listened to Kate Bush. (For all you Stranger Things fans….I found her when I was 12!)
